PRESCOT, AZ. – The Monroe University softball team (16-16 overall) split their final series in Arizona at Yavapai College falling in the first game 9-8 and winning the second game 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
·     An RBI single by Lizbeth Zambrano opened the scoring for the Mustangs to give them a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
·     Later in the same inning, Richellys Rodriguez ripped a two-RBI single to right field, scoring a pair of runs to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
·     In the bottom of the first inning, the Roughriders would tie the game at three off a pair of RBI singles and a groundout.
·     In the bottom of the second inning, the Roughriders took the lead off an RBI single to right field to give them a 4-3 lead.
·     Later in the inning, a two-RBI single to left field gave the Roughriders a 6-3 lead heading into the third inning.
·     In the bottom of the third inning, the Roughriders added to their lead off a passed ball, giving them a 7-3 lead.
·     In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Roughriders tacked on another run on an RBI ground out to give them an 8-3 lead.
·     They added one more run in the inning for an RBI double to center field, scoring one run to give them a 9-3 lead after the fourth inning.
·     The in the top of the fifth inning, the Mustangs added five runs to their side following a passed ball, two-RBI single by Kerris Johnson, and an RBI ground out by Zambrano to cut the Roughriders' lead to 9-7.
·     Zambrano would cut the Roughriders' lead to one with an RBI single to left field, making the score 9-8 in the top of the seventh inning. But the Roughriders held on to take the win 9-8.
Game 2
·      Gabriella Pugliese started the scoring for the Mustangs in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to left field to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
·      In the top of the second inning, McKenzie Williams launched a home run to left field to give them a 2-0 lead.
·      The Roughriders' only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning off an RBI single to center field to resulting in the 2-1 Mustangs victory.
STATS AND NOTES
·     The all-time series against Yavapai is tied at 1-1.
·     McKenzie Williams tallied her third home run of the season.
·     Lizbeth Zambrano went 3-4 at the dish with one double and three RBIs. It's the most this season Zambrano has tallied three hits and three RBIs in a single game.
·     Kerris Johnson extended her hitting streak to three on the year as she went 3-3 in game two and 2-4 in game one.
·     Jaleila Aupont started in the circle in game two, going all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, and struck out seven batters.
