LYNDHURST, N.J.–The Monroe University baseball team (5-13 overall) downed Bergen CC (4-8 overall) 17-2 in five innings on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
·     The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Jesus Nieves scored on an error.
·     Then, in the top of the third inning, Nieves ripped an RBI double which put the Mustangs ahead 2-0.
·     Franklin Francisco followed as he reached first on an error by the second baseman, which scored Nieves to put the Mustangs ahead 3-0.
·     The Mustangs tallied another run in the inning after Francisco advanced to second on an error, which scored Nair Jamanika to put the Mustangs ahead 4-0.
·     Francisco then scored on an error by the first baseman to put the Mustangs ahead 5-0.
·     In the bottom of the third inning, Bergen tallied one run off an RBI double to cut the Mustangs' lead to 5-1.
·     In the fourth inning, Marcus Mercado launched an RBI single, scoring Ryan Marchina to increase the Mustangs' lead to 6-1.
·     The Mustangs then added another run off a wild pitch which scored in Marchina to give the Mustangs a 7-1 lead.
·     Later in the inning, Juan Garcia would rip an RBI single, scoring Mercado to put the Mustangs ahead 8-1.
·     Jamanika followed with an RBI single of his own to put the Mustangs ahead 9-1.
·     A balk by Bergen scored Nieves to put the Mustangs in the lead 10-1.
·     In the same inning, Isaiah Gibbs joined the RBI party with a single scoring in Jamanika, increasing the Mustangs' lead to 11-1.
·     Alejandro Bernard finished the fourth inning with a two-RBI single to put the Mustangs ahead 13-1.
·     In the top of the fifth inning, Francisco hit a fly out to left field, scoring Nieves to put the Mustangs ahead 14-1.
·     A sac ground out by Gibbs followed scoring in Jamanika to give the Mustangs the 15-1 lead.
·     Bernard sealed the inning with a two-RBI double to put the Mustangs ahead 17-1.
·     Bergen added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning after an RBI ground out to seal the 17-2 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
·     Monroe leads the all-time series 3-0.
·     Three Mustangs each tallied three hits on the day, featuring Bernard, Jamanika, and Nieves.
·     Mercado had a powerful day on the field, playing excellent defense at shortstop as he made impressive plays.
·     On the mound, Ronald Pena picked up his first collegiate victory, going four innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out three batters.
·     In each win so far this season, the Mustangs have tallied double-digit runs.

·     The Mustangs return to action on Sunday, March 15, when they face Rowan College for a double-header. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m.
