St. Petersburg, FL – The Monroe University women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-14, 25-17, 12-25, 25-16) victory over St. Petersburg College on Saturday, capping off its three-game slate in Florida with a 2-1 record.
Coming off a tough loss the previous day to Hillsborough Community College, the Mustangs built up a solid victory as teamwork laid the foundation. Defensively and offensively, it was a joint effort as the team had seven different players record a kill as well as a dig.
Freshman
Jelena Peric was the breadwinner offensively for Monroe, accumulating 12 kills, while sophomore
Emma Dedushaj churned out 25 digs for the visitors.
An early hole signaled trouble for the Mustangs in set one, but a 9-1 run in the middle portion set the tone for what was a tremendous bounce back effort. Sophomore
Fabiana Lopez closed the set with back-to-back kills.
Set two once again saw a Mustang run halfway through be the difference maker as Peric added two kills to her total during Monroe's 6-0 run to make it 14-10. While set three was a step back for Monroe, the halt in momentum didn't last as St. Petersburg ran out of steam.
Peric finalized the outing with a kill, her fourth of the set, set up by freshman
Chiara Lovadina.
Monroe will remain on the road for its next matchup against Delaware Technical Community College on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
