Palestine, TX – The Monroe University football team fell to No. 12 Trinity Valley Community College on Saturday evening, 38-10, dropping its first game of the season.
The Mustangs had a scorching start as sophomore
Jayden Young connected with redshirt sophomore
Evan Harrington for a 33-yard touchdown on third down. Young rolled out left under heavy pressure to find a leaping Harrington in the end zone.
Within five minutes of the contests start, Monroe had the Cardinals feeling the pressure. But the momentum jolt was short-lived as Trinity Valley rattled off four consecutive touchdowns to enter the intermission up 28-7.
After Trinity Valley made it 31-7 to open the second half, sophomore
Joseph Wright tacked on a 31-yard field goal to shrink the deficit back to 28. However, the nationally-ranked Cardinals ran the clock out enough to limit Monroe's opportunities at mounting an impressive comeback.
Monroe now sits at 1-1 on the season and will look ahead to its home opener following a bye week on Saturday, September 20, at 1:00 pm against Division III No. 1 College of DuPage.
