Mount Vernon, NY – The Monroe University football team moved to 2-1 on the season with a valiant home opener victory over Division III No. 1 College of DuPage on Saturday.
The Mustangs led 17-3 in the fourth quarter, but a field goal followed by a blocked punt return touchdown by the Chaparrals tied the game up in an instant. A methodical five minute drive — highlighted by a 45-yard catch and run from redshirt sophomore
Jashaun Amin — set up sophomore
Joseph Wright for the eventual game-winning field goal.
DuPage's last-ditch effort to tie or take the lead was thwarted by immense pressure on the quarterback. Freshman
Tavon Barnes had two QB hurries and a sack over the course of the final drive, setting the tone for the emphatic finish.
Barnes, who combined with sophomore
Justice Jordan on the aforementioned sack, contributed to the team total of six sacks on the day, continuing a stellar start in the category for the Mustangs in 2025.
Offensively, the Mustangs were fueled by freshman
Lasean Sharp, who rushed for 60 yards on 19 carries, but came up clutch with some big gains late. The Massachusetts native also found the endzone in the third quarter on a 1-yard pass from freshman
Zavry Ward.
Redshirt sophomore
Jayden Young led the team in passing with 130 yards on nine completions. Young also ran for 51 yards on seven carries. Redshirt freshman
Jordan Leonard-Osbourne was solid on the ground too, supplying the opening touchdown of the game for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs enter a week four matchup against No. 8 Georgia Military College with plenty of momentum on both sides of the ball. They will take on the Bulldogs in Milledgeville, GA, on Saturday, September 27, at 1:00 pm.
