Scranton, PA – The Monroe University women's volleyball team swept its Saturday doubleheader in a tri-match hosted by Lackawanna College. The Mustangs defeated both Raritan Valley Community College (25-11, 25-11, 25-12) and the Falcons (25-13, 25-15, 25-10) to move their win streak to 11 games.
Monroe continues to drive up its record as they've won all of its last 11 games away from New Rochelle. Nine of those games, including six straight, have been by straight sets.
The Mustangs began the tri-match with a third showdown versus Raritan Valley. They capped off the season sweep of the Lions by securing each set by ten-plus points.
Against Lackawanna, another display of balance on the attack brought the win streak to 11. Sophomore
Fabiana Lopez led the team with nine kills on 19 attempts, but three other Mustangs (
Alisha Pereira Rodriguez-Wells,
Jelena Peric and
Adriana Garcia) were not far behind with eight, seven and seven kills, respectively.
An early start for Monroe in set one set the tone, as the visitors stretched its lead to eight in the opening moments of the contest. In set two, an 8-0 run in the middle portion of the set helped Monroe head into set three with tons of momentum.
That carried over as the Mustangs kicked off the final set on an 8-0 run. Lopez tallied two kills in the closing moments of the match, bringing her efficient total to a team-high nine.
Monroe will return to the Monroe Athletic Complex after nearly a month away from home with a rematch against SUNY Ulster on Sunday at noon. The Mustangs defeated the Senators in straight sets this past Tuesday.
