Trenton, NJ – The Monroe University women's soccer team scored seven first half goals in its 7-0 victory at Mercer County Community College on Saturday to move to 4-0-1 on the season.
The Mustangs are on a tear offensively. Over their last three games they have scored 21 times and assisted on 16 of those goals. Against Mercer County, sophomore
Melisa Guarin and
Wiktoria Mikrut led the way with two goals apiece. Freshman
Chloe Ribeiro assisted on two goals, while sophomore
Maiko Kikuchi registered a goal and an assist.
Guarin got the Mustangs started in the 4
th minute with a goal off a corner kick from Mikrut. The second-year defender then added another goal off a corner kick in the 10
th minute, this time delivered by sophomore
Leni Fohrer. The two goals were Guarin's first at Monroe.
After Guarin's second goal, Kikuchi scored a mere 37 seconds later. Mikrut then padded her team-lead in goals in the 23
rd minute. Both Kikuchi's and Mikrut's goals were assisted by Ribeiro.
Freshman
Sara Dakdouka then joined in on the frenzy in the 24
th minute. Fellow freshman
Leonor Lirio De Sousa — who assisted on Dakdouka's goal — then scored in the 31
st minute on a nearly identical score from Dakdouka.
Mikrut then wrapped up the scoring on a penalty strike in the 41
st minute of play.
All in all, the Mustangs rattled off 20 shots in the first half. An additional 11 in the second half overwhelmed the opposing Mustangs, leading the charge and continuing the team's unbeaten streak to start the year.
Freshmen
Victoria Ferreira and
Magdalena Syrek combined for the team's second consecutive clean sheet. Ferreria earned her first career win in the decisive victory over the Mustangs.
A big test awaits Monroe in its next contest — a matchup against No. 10 Monroe Community College. The game is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, at noon.
