New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's volleyball team closed out the Monroe Invitational on Sunday with two straight-set victories, finishing the weekend a perfect 4-0. The Mustangs earned victories against Division III No. 14 Raritan Valley Community College (25-7, 25-11, 25-9) and Montgomery College (25-18, 25-16, 25-12).
The Mustangs made quick work of the Lions as freshman
Adriana Garcia continued her standout weekend. The Puerto Rico native tallied a team-high ten kills in the outing on just 20 attempts and two errors, making for a 40% kill percentage.
They were never really threatened in the contest, with multiple scoring runs providing ample distancing on the scoreboard. Defensively, the Mustangs were locked in with 70 digs — sophomore
Emma Dedushaj led the way with 19. They also committed just one service error as offensive efficiency was way up.
Game two against Montgomery had Monroe on the ropes at times, but in the end, Garcia and sophomore
Flavia Pecora — who also provided six block assists versus the Raptors — kept the Mustangs afloat.
Late surges were vital for Monroe. Set one closed on a 6-2 run as freshman
Alisha Pereira Rodriguez-Wells provided two kills in the closing moments. Set two closed on a 7-2 run, with sophomore
Jelena Peric providing the momentum swing this time around.
Set three was fueled by a 7-0 run to make it 23-10. Garcia and Pecora supplied the finishing touches on what was not just a solid outing, but what was also a spectacular weekend showcasing the team's potential.
After a rocky start to the year at the OWT Tournament, Monroe sits at 5-5 on the year after a perfect 4-0 weekend. It will travel to Florida for its next slate of games. Its first opponent will be Pasco-Hernando College on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
