New Port Richey, FL – The Monroe University women's volleyball team opened up its three-game Florida trip with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-10) victory over Pasco-Hernando College on Wednesday.
Monroe was dominant on the offensive side, generating 58 kills in the outing, including a 52.4% kill percentage in a shutdown fourth set. Freshmen
Adriana Garcia and
Alisha Pereira Rodriguez-Wells led the way with 15 kills, while sophomore
Flavia Pecora joined the freshmen duo in double-digit kills with 11 on another efficient day from the Italy native.
Sophomore
Mileyshka Melendez once again led the way in assists with 25, but freshman
Chiara Lovadina shined too on the playmaking side, accumulating 17 assists with zero errors.
Set one was a back-and-forth affair, with the Mustangs falling behind 23-21. Garcia made her best effort to snatch victory at the hands of defeat with a personal 3-0 run to put Monroe up 24-23, but the Bobcats snatched the momentum back to win a competitive first set.
Set two had the same makeup — back-and-forth in the early portion before a big run late set one team apart. In this case, it was Monroe, as a few attack errors by Pasco-Hernando coupled by two kills from Pecora tied the match up at one.
Another close set in set three saw Pecora and Garcia finalize a 4-1 run with two kills apiece before a rout in set four put the Mustangs above .500 for the first time this season. A late 7-0 run, highlighted by two service aces by sophomore
Jelena Peric, put the Mustangs over.
Monroe will next face Hillsborough Community College on Friday at 5:00 pm.
