Football Cruises To 28-6 Victory Over Sussex County In Season Opener

Newton, NJ – The Monroe University football team kicked off its 2025 season with a convincing, 28-6, victory over Sussex County Community College on Saturday.

From the jump the Mustangs had their foot on the gas as sophomore Jashaun Amin returned the opening kickoff well into Skylanders territory. Amin then reappeared in the redzone, capitalizing on a picturesque play-action fake to put the Mustangs on the board.

Before you could blink, on the ensuing kickoff, sophomore Qua'Yier Alexander stripped the return man at the one-yard line. Freshman Nireese McDougald did the rest, scooping the fumble and putting the Mustangs up 14-0 quickly.

Despite Sussex County countering with a rushing touchdown two possessions later, Monroe remained in control for much of the contest. The offense lived inside the Skylanders half of the field, while the defense limited the hosts from generating much pressure.

After entering the half up 14-6, freshman Zavry Ward — who made his first career start for the Mustangs — scored with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter on a QB draw from Sussex County's one-yard line. Then, at the two-minute warning, a pass deflection on immense QB pressure by sophomore Benogo Diaby set the Mustangs up for one final score to close out the contest.

Sophomore Rodreckus Johnson put the finishing touches on the victory with a 13-yard rushing touchdown with under a minute to play.

Monroe is on the board with a decisive win on the road and they will prepare for a big test against No. 11 Trinity Valley Community College on Saturday, September 6, at 7:00 pm ET.
