Duncan, SC – The #3-seed Monroe University softball team advanced to the championship round of the 2025 Region 10 Tournament with a 1-0 victory over #2-seed USC Union in the loser's bracket final. Earlier in the day, the Mustangs fell in the winner's bracket final against #1-seed Gaston College, 11-3.
After losing twice to the Bantams in the regular season, the Mustangs exacted revenge in a sweet way by bouncing the higher seed from the tournament. They did so in a nail-biting victory that saw freshman
Georgia Wilson close out a complete game shutout.
With the bases-loaded with just one out in the bottom half of the seventh, Wilson induced a 4-6-3 double play to send Monroe to the championship round.
Both sides recorded eight hits, but none was more important than freshman
Yarializ Maldonado's RBI single in the third. Freshman
Reese Surratt reached via a single before stealing second. Sophomore
Gabrielle Gonzalez advanced Surratt before Maldonado drove in the run.
The win catapulted the Mustangs to a rematch against the Rhinos, who used the long ball to defeat Monroe earlier in the day. Gaston launched three home runs in the five-inning win. Freshman
Lizbeth Zambrano supplied her own long ball in the first inning to put Monroe up 2-0.
Despite the early lead, Gaston embarked on a massive six-run fourth inning before ending the contest by the run-rule in the fifth.
Monroe will have to win twice over Gaston to win the tournament. Its first shot at the Rhinos will come on Saturday at 10:00 am.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
