Lancaster, PA – Head coach
John Torres of the Monroe University JV baseball team earned his 200th career win on Friday in a 12-10 victory at Lancaster Bible College JV. The Mustangs erupted for 12 runs on 11 hits, but had to hold off the Chargers late to secure Torres's milestone.
Leading 12-5 heading into the final half-inning, Monroe ran into some trouble with just one out on the board. A five-run seventh capped off by a two-run home run cut Lancaster Bible's deficit to two runs. However, sophomore
Juan Ramos remained poised, retiring the final two batters to help the Mustangs achieve double-digit victories for the first time since 2018.
Not only did the Mustangs clinch a ten-win season, but Torres achieved a career highlight with win number 200 after previous stops at St. Joseph's, NYU-Poly Tech, Mount St. Vincent, Borough of Manhattan and most recently Monroe (Bronx).
A big fifth inning was the catalyst in the milestone victory for the program and Torres. After falling behind 2-1, the Mustangs scored seven runs on six hits to leap in front.
Freshman
Cesar Candelario got the scoring started with an RBI double. Then, freshman
Dominic Guzman made it 3-2 with a single up the middle. With the bases-loaded, sophomore
Melvin Laracuente doubled in two runs before freshman
Matthew DeFisher did the same.
The scoring didn't stop there as Monroe tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh — much needed insurance runs considering the late Lancaster Bible rally.
Freshman
John Garcia earned the win after striking out six batters across his 4.2 innings of work.
The Mustangs are rolling to start their Pennsylvania road trip, having won six of their last ten.
They line up to take on Northampton Community College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
