Baltimore, MD – In a complete and dominant performance, the #1-seed Monroe University women's basketball team advanced to the Region 20 Championship Game with a 76-22 victory over #4-seed Baltimore City Community College on Friday.
The Mustangs didn't allow a field goal until the 1:12 mark of the third quarter. By that point in the contest, the top-seed in the bracket had mounted a 61-point lead. On the day, the Mustangs limited the Panthers to one free throw in the first quarter and zero points in the second.
A 42-1 halftime lead blossomed into a 63-3 lead by the conclusion of the third. While Baltimore City outscored the Mustangs, 19-13, in the fourth, the damage had already been done as Monroe seeks its fifth straight national tournament appearance.
The starting five combined to play just 41 minutes as the bench took over, showing off the versatility and depth of the Mustangs. Freshmen
Darrian Jackson and
Dunja Miletic led the team in scoring with 18 and 15, respectively. Sophomore
Julia Pacheco tallied 12 of the team's 59 rebounds, with 24 of those being on the offensive end.
Baltimore City could not convert all night as Monroe took advantage, leading to a shot at the Region 20 Championship against #2-seed Harford Community College.
The Mustangs swept the season series and will go for a third win in the all-important championship match on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
