New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's basketball team completed its regular season circuit with an 87-65 victory over Montgomery College on Saturday.
Four Mustangs recorded double figure points on the day, with freshman
Faquir Mosley leading the way with 15 points on efficient shooting splits. Fellow freshman
Qingfang Pang scored 13 points. Both players came off the bench to lead the team in scoring.
Sophomores
Devere Palmer Jr. and
Hassan Washington joined the two freshmen in double digits with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Monroe proceeded to yield 13 straight points to begin the game to put itself in an early hole. The Mustangs spent some time playing from behind in the first half, but a three-pointer from Mosley tied the game up at 22 with five minutes remaining.
Pang then converted a traditional three-point play to give Monroe the lead back — a lead it would never relinquish the rest of the way as they closed the half on a 14-6 run.
Up 36-28 at the break, the Mustangs continued to run with the momentum. Palmer Jr. led the way with ten second half points, while Pang chipped in eight. Monroe's biggest lead was 27 as they dictated the tempo and controlled the contest throughout the second half.
The Mustangs close out the regular season at 23-7 and will have a shot at clinching a berth into the NJCAA National Tournament when they host the East District Tournament from March 6-8.
As the number one overall seed, Monroe will hold a bye before taking on the winner of Allegany College of Maryland and Baltimore City Community College on Friday, March 7 at 7:00 pm.

There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
