Purchase, NY – The Monroe University baseball team earned a 13-3 victory over Citius Prep on Friday after reaching base via walk an astonishing 15 times. Freshmen
Dirso Melendez and
Gavin Marchese each garnered a team-high three walks on the day.
It wasn't the most dominant victory for the Mustangs despite the lopsided score and eventual run-rule decision, but the team did take advantage of Citius's mistakes. Of the 15 walks to Mustang batters, eight of them would round the bases to score.
Monroe also reached base on three hit-by-pitches and advanced on eight total wild pitches.
The Mustangs were active on the basepaths with all the miscues by Citius, with freshman
Jesus Nieves leading the pack with three of the team's eight stolen bases.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Mustangs used a five-run third and fourth to jump out in front by a large margin. Nieves, Marchese, Melendez and sophomore
Ronald Almanzar each picked up RBIs, while sophomore
Anthony Fernandez led the team with two hits, including the lone extra base hit on a double in the first.
On the mound, five different Mustangs allowed just five combined hits. The win went to freshman
Kyle Mandirola, who earned his fourth victory of the season with two no-hit innings in relief.
Monroe will next take on Rockland Community College on Tuesday, March 18, at 3:30 pm.
