New Rochelle, NY – The No. 11 Monroe University women's soccer team defeated No. 16 Monroe Community College, 3-2, on Friday to claim the Region 15 title and advance to the championship of the East District Tournament.
 
Freshman Wiktoria Mikrut — whose three goals the last time out against the Tribunes catapulted the Mustangs to victory — was once again the difference-maker against the Region 15 rival. Her two goals not only marked a terrific month of October, but helped Monroe maintain its unbeaten record and advance to next Friday's championship game.
 
Mikrut scored in the 48^th and 66^th minute, with her second goal coming from well outside the penalty box. It was her 23^rd and 24^th goals of the season, which lead all of NJCAA Division I. It also marked her ninth total game and seventh in a row of scoring multiple goals for the Mustangs.
 
While Mikrut was the catalyst in the contest, freshman Sara Dakdouka got the Mustangs off to a roaring start in the 6^th minute of action. Broken defense coverage allowed freshman Julia Migacz to find Dakdouka with plenty of room for the opening score the game.
 
Following Dakdouka's goals were the two from Mikrut, which were assisted by sophomores Valentina Carmona and Maiko Kikuchi. The three-goal first half left little room for celebration however, as the Tribunes scored twice in the span of ten minutes to make it a 3-2 game late.
 
Despite the minor scare towards the tail end of the game, Monroe kept on delivering when it mattered most and winded down the clock to zero to pull off the season sweep. Monroe doubled up Monroe CC in shots with 14, which included 11 on goal.
 
The Mustangs will play for a spot in the NJCAA Division I national tournament next Friday, November 7, at a time to be determined. They will face-off against the Region 20 Champion.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
