Rockville, MD – The Monroe University women's volleyball team improved to 20-6 and increased its win streak to 14 games after defeating Montgomery College, 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 25-12), on Friday.
The Mustangs survived an extended first set and a loss in set two to finish off the Raptors in four sets. Freshman
Alisha Pereira Rodriguez-Wells once again led the team in kills with 13, while sophomore
Flavia Pecora and freshman
Adriana Garcia backed her up with 11 and 10, respectively.
Leading 19-14 late in the first set, Monroe ceded a 7-2 run to leave the set tied at 23. The Mustangs had the edge, however, never letting Montgomery lead despite two ties thereafter. Pecora and sophomore
Fabiana Lopez punctuated the set with back-to-back kills — both set up by freshman
Chiara Lovadina.
In set two, Monroe couldn't carry its momentum as another late stretch by the Raptors helped tie the match up. Despite falling behind 7-3 early, the Mustangs mounted a comeback in set three, taking three straight points in the middle of the set to make it 18-14.
A 9-2 start to the fourth and final set put the Mustangs in an advantageous position. Garcia had four kills in the set, while Lopez finalized the outing with her fifth kill of the game.
Monroe sets its sights on a road tilt at County College of Morris on Wednesday before traveling to Tennessee for the Walters State Invitational next weekend.
