New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's volleyball team capped off its regular season schedule with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-10) victory over Harcum College on Friday as the team honored its sophomore class pregame.
Freshman
Adriana Garcia led the way with 12 kills, while sophomore
Fabiana Lopez closed out her regular season campaign with nine kills. Sophomore
Emma Dedushaj finished with 21 digs, putting her season total at 741 — just 29 off tying the single-season record.
It was a narrow first set as neither team could gain much traction until a rare kill by sophomore
Mileyshka Melendez preceded an attack error by the Bears to put Monroe up 24-22. After an attack error by the home team made it a one-point game again, sophomore
Jelena Peric put the finishing touches on a kill set up by Melendez.
In set two, three separate 3-0 runs and a 4-0 run helped Monroe pull away from the pack and lead 22-11. Harcum began to close the gap a bit late, but it was once again the offensive display from Peric that put the Mustangs over the hump.
Set three was no contest as a 7-0 run to begin the set put Harcum in a difficult spot. Lopez and sophomore
Deyja Tshibangu highlighted a strong third set for the Mustangs. Freshman
Bianca Valdes capped off the night with a service ace.
The Mustangs conclude the season on a 25-game winning streak. With a 31-6 overall record, 21 of the 25 consecutive wins have come in straight sets, including nine straight.
The 31 wins are the most since a 36-win campaign in 2022, which included a Region and District championship, and a berth to the NJCAA Division I national tournament. Under head coach
Nephtali Delgado Reyes, the team's 31 wins were the most regular season wins since 2015.
The region tournament is up first for the Mustangs in their quest for postseason glory. More details on their opponent will become finalized in the coming days.
