Scranton, PA – The top-seeded Monroe University women's volleyball took home the Region 19 Championship on Saturday, sweeping both #4-seed Harcum College (25-13, 25-12, 25-10) and #2-seed Lackawanna College (25-15, 25-15, 25-7) en route to the title victory.
Sophomore
Fabiana Lopez was named tournament MVP after delivering 24 kills across the two contests. Freshman
Adriana Garcia earned All-Tournament team status with 21 kills and five services aces against the Bears and Falcons.
Much like last season, the Mustangs coasted to the Region 19 title behind back-to-back sweeps. Lackawanna fell victim to Monroe in both finals as the Mustangs pushed their win streak to 27 games.
Against Harcum, sophomore
Kristhaly Torres and Garcia finalized the first set with a kill from Torres followed by a subsequent service ace by Garcia. Set two saw sophomore
Ziyan Zhang move the Mustangs to a 24-11 lead before an attack error closed it out. Then, in set three, a 6-0 run capped off by a kill from sophomore
Flavia Pecora moved Monroe to the title game.
In the final, freshman
Chiara Lovadina and sophomore
Mileyshka Melendez were phenomenal, each contributing 15 assists apiece. Lopez garned 11 kills on 18 attempts, while Garcia went 8-for-17. Sophomore
Emma Dedushaj — who had 26 digs in the semi-finals — led the team once again in the championship game with 17 digs.
Monroe advances to the district title game where they will look to redeem itself following a home loss to Harford Community College last season. Date, time and opponent is to be determined.
