Game Recap: JV Men's Basketball |

JV Basketball Earns Gritty Victory Over SUNY Ulster

New Rochelle, NY – Following a tough overtime loss earlier in the week, the Monroe University JV men's basketball team defeated SUNY Ulster, 79-57, on Wednesday evening. Sophomore Luther Reid Jr. led all scorers with 19 points.

Reid Jr. connected on five three-pointers on the night, including four in a scorching start to the contest. Fellow sophomore Clarence Ruffin controlled the pace of the game with an excellent display of composure all night. He scored 16 points and distributed a team-high four assists.

The Mustangs were in control for much of the night, but a late first half run by the Senators made it a 29-28 game at the half. Up ten with 3:48 remaining, the visitors rallied with a 9-0 run to close out the opening ten minutes.

However, the Mustangs didn't falter as they built their lead back up to ten a few minutes into the second half. Ruffin scored seven points during the team's 9-0 run.

The grit of Monroe continued to shine as time waned away. Freshman Delano Evans did most of the dirty work in a stellar game for the Brooklyn forward, while sophomore Turone Kelley Jr. and freshman Jamell Williams tidied up any scoring droughts by the Mustangs with clutch baskets.

Williams punctuated the 50-point second half with a thunderous and-one with 41 seconds left. The bucket came after a steal by Kelley Jr., who joined Williams in accounting for 14 of Monroe's final 19 points in the game.

It was an impressive showing from the Mustangs and they will look to keep up their winning ways when they travel to Columbia, MD, to take on Howard Community College JV on Saturday, January 25 at 5:00 pm.
