New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's basketball team eclipsed 100 points on Wednesday evening, defeating Drive Basketball Academy, 101-71, to move to 16-4 on the season and 3-0 in the calendar year.
Freshman
Eric Mejia paced the Mustangs with 24 points, but it was freshman David Emetu that the stole the show in just the third game of his career. After missing the prior 17 games due to injury, Emetu broke with a 21-and-12 double-double against Drive. Across his 21 minutes off the bench, the Nigeria native shot 7-for-11 and contributed three steals as well in the win.
Emetu joined Mejia and three other double-digit scorers (
Hassan Washington,
Jordan Sanders, and
Ryan Williams Jr.) as the Mustangs coasted to victory against the Finnish prep school.
Once again, it was an efficient night for Monroe as it shot over 50% in both halves to finish the contest 35-for-67 from the field. The team connected on ten threes, with Sanders and Mejia leading the way with four and three three-pointers, respectively.
The Mustangs were unselfish too, recording 20 assists — their second 20-plus assist outing of 2025 in three games. Mejia dished out seven assists, while the trio of Sanders, Williams Jr., and freshman
Qingfang Pang distributed four assists each.
Williams Jr. got the game started with a signature slam and the Mustangs never looked back. Entering the second half up 44-23, the Mustangs kept their foot on the gas putting up 57 second half points in the solid showing.
Mejia was on fire across the final 20 minutes, scoring 19 points on three three-pointers. Emetu nearly clinched a second half double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
While Drive cut the deficit to 11 points with just over ten minutes to play, Monroe never let the prep school crack single digits as free throws made its lead insurmountable.
The Monroe University MLK Classic approaches this weekend, with Monroe setting up to face to Erie Community College on Saturday, January 18, at 7:00 pm.
