New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's basketball team won their fifth game in a row on Saturday, defeating Erie Community College, 81-61, in its opening matchup of the MLK Classic.
Freshman
Eric Mejia continued his fantastic stretch of games with a game-high 21 points and nine assists. Sophomore
Jordan Sanders followed Mejia in the scoring output with 18, while fellow sophomore
Ryan Williams Jr. joined the two in double-digits with ten points and nine boards.
The Mustangs once again dominated the paint and the turnover battle as they outscored the Kats by 26 points in the paint. On turnovers, the Mustangs controlled the pace with a plus-ten differential and a 26-to-13 margin in points off turnovers.
There was a lid on the basket in the opening half, however, as Monroe shot just 37% in the first 20 minutes. Leading by four at the half, the Mustangs flipped the script, putting together a scorching hot second half that saw their field goal percentage jump to 57%, outscoring the Kats, 47-31, in the process.
Mejia caught fire in the closing 20 minutes, scoring 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Sanders connected on three three-pointers in the latter half of the game, helping the Mustangs cruise to victory.
Next up for Monroe are Division II No. 12 Monroe Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Sunday as the Mustangs will close out the MLK Classic.
