New Rochelle, NY – The No. 25 Monroe University men's basketball team put together a strong second half to defeat Raritan Valley Community College, 85-63, on day two of the Monroe Mixer on Sunday.
The Mustangs finished the weekend 2-0 as they battled from an early first half deficit by scoring 55 second half points. Sophomore
Hassan Washington led the way with a monstrous 27-and-12 double-double. Freshman
Eric Mejia nearly recorded a double-double as well, scoring 19 points and corralling nine rebounds.
Struggling to find cohesion in the first half, Monroe fell behind 34-30 at the break, but a much more efficient second half broke the door open. The Mustangs shot 71% from the field over the final 20 minutes, getting most of their work in the paint with 28 second half points.
Tied at 43, the Mustangs embarked on a 42-20 run to conclude the weekend slate. Sophomore
Ryan Williams Jr. accounted for four of the first six points of the run, helping ignite the Mustangs. A 17-0 run that started at the 13:02 mark put the
Golden Lions in too big of a hole.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Wednesday, January 15, at 6:00 pm to take on Driven Academy.
