Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Garrett and Pennsylvania Highlands in Tri-Match

McHENRY, Md., September 28, 2024 – The Monroe University Mustangs women's volleyball team completed a flawless weekend on Saturday in a tri-match at Garrett College, picking up back-to-back three-set victories over the host Lakers and Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. The Mustangs improve to 14-4 overall with two more wins.
 
MATCH #1: Monroe 3, Garrett 0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-19)
The Mustangs kept their momentum from the night before in Saturday's opener. They picked up a 25-18 win over their hosts in the first frame. They then had a dominant second stanza, defeating the Lakers, 25-11, to go up two sets. Monroe then closed out the match with a 25-19 win to sweep the opener against Garrett.
 
Madison Smith had a nice start to the day with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the win. Natalia Rodriguez produced eight kills (.545 clip) with four aces and four digs. Flavia Pecora threw down seven kills with eight digs and three aces. Jelena Peric put together five kills with a team-high 11 digs while matching the team lead with five aces. Mileyshka Melendez also have five aces to go with a team-best 23 assists, as well as four digs.
 
MATCH #2: Monroe 3, Pennsylvania Highlands 0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-8)
The Mustangs were even more dominant in their second match of the day, holding the Black Bears to nine points or fewer in all three sets. They won each of the first two sets with a 25-9 score before closing out the day with a 25-8 win. Monroe hit a highly efficient .475 in the match while holding Penn Highlands to a -.019 clip.
 
Three Mustangs were incredibly efficient with their swings in the win over Penn Highlands. Smith led the team with eight kills and a .778 hitting percentage, adding a season-best nine service aces and four digs. Pecora hit .700 with seven kills and five digs in the match. Jennifer Santana threw down seven kills as well and hit .667. Elin De Boer led the team with 15 assists in the win, while Melendez handed out 13 to go with two aces. Fabiana Lopez served up six aces to go with three kills and two digs. Olivia Hall picked up a team-high 10 digs with four kills and an ace. Madeline Lacelle scooped up five digs in the match.
 
The Mustangs head back down to Maryland this coming week. They begin a two-match trip on Thursday, Oct. 3, when they visit Carroll Community College in Westminster, Md. Thursday's match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
