SELDEN, N.Y., September 15, 2024 – The Monroe University Mustangs women's soccer team picked up its fourth shutout victory of the season on Saturday, defeating NJCAA Div. III Suffolk County Community College on the road, 3-0. The Mustangs improve to 5-2 overall, while the Sharks drop to 2-1-3.
The game was quiet in the opening half on Saturday, as neither team was able to break through over the first 45 minutes of the match.
Katherine Bean-Rosario finally broke the shutout in the 66th minute off an assist from
Maiko Kikuchi to give Monroe a 1-0 edge. The roles were then reversed nine minutes later when Bean-Rosario set up Kikuchi for a score to make it a 2-0 game. Two minutes later,
Carmen Santamaria netted one more for Monroe in the 77th minute to help the Mustangs reach the final score of 3-0.
Goalkeeper
Beatrice Vitaletti made eight stops to earn another shutout victory and improve to 4-2 overall on the season. Melissa Barahona made 11 saves but allowed three goals for Suffolk to suffer the loss.
Bean-Rosario totaled three points with a goal and an assist in the win, pacing the team with seven total shots as well. Kikuchi netted three points as well on a goal and an assist of her own on five shot attempts. Santamaria provided the final goal of the day for two points.
The Mustangs are back at it next Saturday, Sept. 21, when they visit Div. II No. 19 CCBC Essex in Baltimore, Md. Saturday's game is set to kick off at 2 p.m.
