No. 13 Mustangs Women’s Soccer Drops Defensive Battle at No. 7 Navarro

CORSICANA, Texas, August 28, 2024 – On a long travel day followed by sweltering weather conditions down in Texas, the No. 13-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 final score in the program's first-ever matchup against No. 7 Navarro College Wednesday evening. The Mustangs' record evens at 1-1 with the loss, while the Bulldogs improve to 2-0-1.

Neither team managed to get on the scoreboard in the opening half, as the game reached the 45-minute mark with a 0-0 score. However, the Bulldogs appeared to have the edge after outshooting the Mustangs, 7-1.

That momentum proved fruitful for the home team in the 54th minute when Constance Agyemang scored off an assist from Zoe Nelson to put the seventh-ranked Bulldogs up by a goal. The Mustangs were able to generate more chances in the second frame, putting four shots on frame while down a goal, but unfortunately every chance was kept out of the net. With just seconds remaining in the game, Maria Jose potted one more for the Bulldogs off a feed from Agyemang to double the score right before the buzzer.

Monroe's Beatrice Vitaletti made her second start in net on Wednesday, making five saves but yielding two goals to move her season record to an even 1-1. Fabiola Mishell made four stops without allowing a score to improve to 2-0 for the Bulldogs.

Carmen Santamaria generated the most chances for the Mustangs in Wednesday's match, firing off three shots and putting two on goal. Katherine Neves, Julia Meyer and Hara Sakurako each had a chance to score as well, but each of their shot attempts was saved.

After an early-morning flight on Wednesday leading directly into the game with Navarro, the Mustangs will rest up tonight before competing in their second and final match of the trip tomorrow evening at Dallas College Eastfield in Mesquite, Texas. Thursday's game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. ET.
