Trio of Double-Doubles Help Mustangs Women’s Basketball Roll Past Harford in Regular-Season Finale

BEL AIR, Md., February 26, 2024 – Three Mustangs registered double-doubles, while five scored in double figures on Monday, as the Monroe College women's basketball team defeated Harford Community College, 81-34, in Monroe's regular-season finale at the APG Federal Credit Union Arena. The Mustangs cap off the regular-season slate with a 17-10 overall record, while Harford drops to 4-22.
 
Alycia Secchiaroli had her best game of the season on Monday, totaling 13 points with a season-high 15 rebounds in the win. Sharon Brown notched her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, nearly reaching a triple-double with eight steals. Emma Wilson-Saltos turned in her 16th double-double of the year, totaling 11 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Carlota Gomez-Alonso led the team in scoring on Monday with 15 points. She got close to a triple-double herself with eight rebounds and seven steals. Shanelle Smith joined the others in double figures with 11 points on the evening. Ariana Manforte had season highs of seven points and four rebounds in the win, while Aniya Laforest did the same with seven points and five boards.
 
It was all Mustangs from start to finish in Monday night's matchup down in Bel Air. The Mustangs scored the first six points of the game before Harford made a bucket. That was the last score for the home team in the opening period, as Monroe rattled off another 18 points to take a 24-2 advantage into the second.
 
Monroe's run extended to 29-0 with the first 11 points of the second quarter, giving the Mustangs a commanding 35-2 lead. Harford began to get on the board to make it a 39-14 game, but Monroe held the Fighting Owls scoreless for the final four minutes of the half, adding another nine points to bring a 48-14 lead into the half.
 
A 9-0 stretch early in the third pushed Monroe's lead to 42 points. After a three by Harford, the Mustangs wrapped up the third on a 9-3 run to make it a 68-23 score heading to the final frame.
 
The Fighting Owls scored the first layup of the fourth before the Mustangs scored seven straight to reach a 50-point difference at 75-25. The Fighting Owls went on a mini run, scoring 9-of-11, to make it a 77-34 score, but the Mustangs scored the final four points of the game to secure the 81-34 victory.
 
With the regular season now in the rear view, the Mustangs now have their sights set on the postseason and a third-straight trip to the NJCAA Div. I Women's Basketball Championship. That road begins this coming weekend with the NJCAA Div. I Region 20 Championship, which will be hosted by Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland, Md., from Saturday, March 2, through Sunday, March 3. The tournament seeding and schedule will be announce this week.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
