GALVESTON, Texas, February 15, 2024 – Taking on a nationally ranked team for the first time this season, the Monroe College Mustangs softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at No. 19 Galveston College on Thursday.

GAME 1: #19 Galveston 5, Monroe 0
The Whitecaps took the lead in the bottom of the second in Game 1. With runner on first and third, Samantha Gonzalez doubled to left to clear the bases and put the home team up, 2-0.

Karlie Barba extended the lead for the Whitecaps in the bottom of the third when she hit a solo homer to right, making it a 3-0 game. In the fourth, Gonzalez hit another RBI double to push the home team's lead to four. In the fifth, Breigh Houser added one more run for Galveston in the fifth with an RBI double of her own to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Jenna Johnston went all seven innings for the Whitecaps in the win to improve to 5-0.
Sarah Wall took the loss for the Mustangs.

Gabriella Diaz hit 1-for-2 with a stolen base in the game.
Aisling Wilson batted 1-for-3.

GAME 2: #19 Galveston 22, Monroe 2 (5 INN)
The Whitecaps built a huge lead early in Game 2, putting 12 runs on the board across the first two innings. Another four runs came in on Galveston's second grand slam of the game in the third. Monroe picked up a couple runs when Wilson hit an RBI groundout, and an error on the play allowed a second run to score. The Whitecaps then scored another six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Barba picked up the win in three innings for the Whitecaps in Game 2.
Nadyelly Bones shouldered the loss for the Mustangs.

Gabrielle Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with a run scored in Game 2, while she and
Angie Ordonez each had a stolen base.

The Mustangs make the move over to Lufkin, Texas, on Friday to play a pair of games at Angelina College. The Mustangs open the day against Angelina at 1 p.m. ET. They will then take on No. 15 Butler Community College in a neutral-site game at 3 p.m. ET.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
