Monroe Mustangs Softball Falls Twice at San Jacinto

HOUSTON, Texas, February 12, 2024 – The Monroe College Mustangs softball team was swept in a doubleheader at San Jacinto College Monday evening, dropping Game 1, 23-6, before a 14-2 defeat in Game 2.

GAME 1: San Jacinto 23, Monroe 6 (5 INN)
Things went awry early in Game 1 for the Mustangs, as the Ravens put 15 runs on the board in the first two frames. However, Monroe put together a huge rally of its own in the top of the third. Gabrielle Gonzalez got things going with a one-out single, followed by a bunt single by Gabriella Diaz. Marissa Thalassinos was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Aisling Wilson took advantage with a bases-clearing triple to right, putting three runs on the board. Georgia Burr knocked her in with a single, and then Amber Miltenberg drew a walk to keep things rolling. With runners on the corners after Burr stole third, Nathalie Mongrain grounded out to second, but was able to bring Burr home for Monroe's fifth run. Maricela Colon capped off the inning with an infield single that brought Miltenberg home to make it a 15-6 game.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, those were their only runs of the game, as the Ravens put brought another eight runs in across the next two frames to reach a 23-6 final after five.

Gigi Carrion got the win in relief for the Ravens after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings. Sarah Wall took the loss for Monroe to fall to 0-2.

Wilson finished 1-for-3 with her three-RBI triple and a run scored in Game 1. Burr scored a run, knocked in another and stole a base in a 1-for-3 outing. Colon hit 1-for-2 with an RBI. Thalassinos finished 1-for-2 with a run. Gonzalez and Diaz both went 1-for-3 with a run. Nadyelly Bones took over on the mound and in the nine hole and went 1-for-2.

GAME 2: San Jacinto 14, Monroe 2 (5 INN)
Game 2 got off to a much better start for the Mustangs. With one out, Thalassinos drew a walk, and was then sacrificed over to second. Wilson then continued a big day, blasting her first home run of the season to leave the Mustangs up, 2-0.

The lead did not last long for Monroe, as the Ravens quickly put three runs on the scoreboard in the home half of the first to ultimately jump ahead for good. A six-run second and a five-run third proved to be all San Jac needed in Game 2 to eventually pick up a 14-2 win in five innings.

Ashleigh Heiderscheit picked up the complete-game victory for the Ravens in Game 2. Diaz took her second loss of the season in the game.

Wilson hit 1-for-2 with a two-run homer in Game 2. Miltenberg doubled in a 1-for-2 outing.

The Mustangs will stay in Houston to take on a new opponent on Tuesday, Feb. 13, when they visit NCAA Div. III University of St. Thomas. Tuesday's doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT).
