Columbia, MD – Sophomore
Ryan Williams Jr. of the No. 22 Monroe University men's basketball team secured his second consecutive double-double in an 80-55 win over Division II No. 15 Howard Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Across 38 minutes the Queens native scored 16 points and secured 11 boards in Monroe's 25-point victory. Just as they did yesterday against CCBC Catonsville, the trio of freshman
Eric Mejia and sophomores
Devere Palmer Jr. and
Hassan Washington scored in double figures too.
It was another smooth victory for the Mustangs as they improved to 11-2 on the season and increased their win streak to nine games, ensuring the stretch will span at least a month. They haven't lost since losing to current No. 19 College of Southern Idaho on November 9.
Against the Dragons, the Mustangs put up 40 points in both halves. Washington led the way with ten points in the first half, while Mejia and Williams Jr. each poured in eight points over the final 20 minutes of action.
A two-point lead with just over eight minutes to go soon turned into a 13-point lead by halftime. The 19-8 run to close the half was led by the quartet of Mejia, Washington, Williams Jr. and Palmer Jr., with a three-pointer by sophomore
Jordan Sanders sprinkled into the run.
The five starters scored 37 of the teams 40 points in the opening half.
The lead teetered around 13 for a decent chunk of the second half before Monroe pulled away. An 8-0 run spearheaded by freshman
Faquir Mosley, who scored six of the eight points, put the Mustangs up 64-41 with 7:43 remaining.
A traditional three-point play from Williams Jr. put an emphatic ending to a successful trip to Maryland for the Mustangs.
The next stop is Florida, where the Mustangs will compete in four contests across five days. Their first opponent will be Florida Southwestern State College, which is scheduled to be played on Friday, December 13 at 7:00 pm.
