Fort Myers, FL – The No. 17 Monroe University men's basketball team's win streak reached ten on Friday evening following a defeat of Florida Southwestern State College, 90-75, to open its four-game slate in the Sunshine State.
Freshman
Eric Mejia shined, recording a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mejia joined sophomore
Devere Palmer Jr. off the bench and in double figures, with Palmer Jr. scoring 16 points on eight made free throws. Sophomores
Ryan Williams Jr. (18) and
Hassan Washington (12) scored in double figures as well.
The game was won in the first half as Monroe took a 46-28 into the intermission. Williams Jr. was on fire, connecting on three threes across a full 20 minutes. Washington chipped in ten points on an efficient 4-for-5 from the field.
The second half saw Mejia and Palmer Jr. switch roles with the tandem of sophomores that impressed in the first half. Most of their damage was done at the line as the team's two leading free throw shooters each made six from the charity stripe. Mejia scored 15 in the second half, while Palmer Jr. added 12.
A three-pointer by Florida Southwestern with just under ten minutes remaining cut the Monroe lead to nine. But a jumper from freshman
Faquir Mosley pushed the lead back to double-digits and it never dipped back below that mark the rest of the way.
Miami Dade College is up next for the Mustangs as they look to increase their win streak to 11. The game scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 pm.
