New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University JV men's basketball team suffered a narrow 85-83 loss to Bryant & Stratton (VA) College on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore
Turone Kelley Jr. recorded another double-double in the loss, putting up 28 points and corralling ten rebounds.
Monroe led by three with just under two minutes remaining, but the Bobcats mustered nine free throws over the final stretch of the contest to snatch victory. The visitors closed the game on an 11-6 run.
Sophomore
Amarion Berry had a breakout game from beyond the arc as he matched a team-high with four made threes. Berry scored 16 points, while freshman
Jamell Williams scored 15 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
The Mustangs led at the half despite missing two of its regular starters. Kelley Jr. scored 16 first half points on an efficient 7-for-12 mark from the field, while Williams chipped in 12. Sophomores Berry,
Clarence Ruffin and
Armani Walker made up the remaining points.
A layup from sophomore
De'Angelo Owens put the Mustangs up by 14 with 15:12 left to play, capping off a solid 7-0 run by the team. But the Bobcats responded well out of the timeout, cutting the deficit to one point with just over ten minutes left.
The two sides traded buckets from there on as the Bobcats controlled the free throw line. They shot 37 from the charity stripe compared to 19 by the Mustangs. That was the difference maker in a back-and-forth second half that saw the game come down to the final possession.
Monroe will have nearly a month off before returning to action on Sunday, January 12 at 7:00 pm against Touro University.
