New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University JV men's basketball team suffered a 91-77 loss to Omega Sports Academy International on Sunday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs led at halftime, 45-44, but the Huskies dominated the paint to the tune of 48 points to snatch the victory. Sophomore
Luther Reid Jr. led all scorers with 23 points, while fellow sophomore Turone Kelly Jr. competed for a 20-10 double-double.
It was a tight first half, with neither team taking more than a four-point lead. Reid Jr. was on fire, cashing in on four three-pointers for a 14-point first half. The Augusta, GA, native also stuffed the stat sheet with three steals and three assists in the opening 20 minutes.
But Omega Sports Academy International came out firing in the second half, attacking the undersized Mustangs in the paint and getting to the line at will. The Huskies shot 26 free throws throughout the contest compared to Monroe's 20, and they capitalized, making 17 of the 26.
The Mustangs let the Huskies hang around for too long and a 9-0 run in the early portion of the second half gave the Huskies enough of a cushion. While they only maintained a single-digit lead until around the seven-minute mark, the visitors didn't trail over the final 15:15 of action.
Monroe falls to 0-2 on the year and will look for win number one on the road against Middlesex College on Wednesday, November 6, at 6:00 pm.
