Late Run Earns JV Basketball 91-87 Win Over Drew JV

New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University JV men's basketball team built its win streak up to four with a 91-87 victory over Drew University JV on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs led 68-67 before embarking on a 17-4 run that distanced themselves enough to snag the hard-fought victory. Sophomore Luther Reid Jr. kickstarted the stretch with an enormous three-pointer, his first of the day.

Up 76-70, a thunderous dunk from sophomore De'Angelo Owens broke open the game as the Mustangs proceeded to go on a 9-1 run after the jam. An and-one from freshman Jamell Williams capped off the run, putting Monroe in control with an 85-71 lead.

Sophomore Turone Kelley Jr. was sensational once again, chipping in 27 points and 14 rebounds. Owens poured in 14 points, while Williams scored 16 points off the bench. Sophomore Clarence Ruffin rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13.

Drew led for much of the first half, taking its largest lead of the game (37-26) at the 7:58 mark. But Monroe held strong and entered the half up 48-46. Kelley Jr. scored 17 points, while Owens chipped in nine.

The Mustangs then flipped the script and led for much of the early portion of the second half. A lay-in by the Rangers gave them a 65-64 lead — their first of the half — but Monroe once again persevered as the game-sealing run commenced.

The Gold & Blue are rolling and they will head into the holiday break at 4-4. Their next matchup will take place Wednesday, December 4 at 7:00 pm when they hit the road to take on New York Military Academy.
