New Rochelle, NY – Sophomore
Turone Kelley Jr. of the Monroe University JV men's basketball team poured in an impressive 30 points in Friday afternoon's 75-60 win over Misericordia JV.
Kelley Jr. was dominant and efficient, scoring his 30 points on 13 made field goals. Overall, the Connecticut native was 13-for-20 from the field and connected on four made threes.
Freshman
Jamell Williams and sophomore
Clarence Ruffin joined Kelley Jr. as double-digit scorers, with Williams chipping in 14 points off the bench, while Ruffin added 11 points.
Kelley Jr. scored the first seven points of the contest for the Mustangs as both sides went punch for punch in the early going. A 9-3 run in the middle portion of the half, kickstarted by one of Kelley Jr.'s three-pointers, gave Monroe a slight edge, one it was able to hold onto as the half ended.
Leading 25-23 at the break, Kelly Jr. had 14 of his 30 points on 6-for-9 shooting.
The Mustangs proceeded to double its first half point total with a 50-point outburst in the second half. Both Kelley Jr. and Williams cashed in on two threes in the half as the Mustangs began to gain separation from the Cougars.
A thunderous dunk from Kelley Jr. set the tone for the half, sending the crowd and Monroe bench into a frenzy. Still, free throws from the Cougars made it a two-point game with 13:42 remaining.
But the Mustangs pieced together a solid run, punctuated by another three from Kelley Jr. to take a 16-point lead. Three straight threes made by sophomore
Ezekiel Michael, and freshmen
Ariel Font and
Edmond Boakye finalized the contest in the closing minutes.
It was a key win for the Mustangs as they build on their road win against Lancaster Bible College JV. With two wins in a row under their belt, the Mustangs will next take on Mitchell College JV on Sunday, November 24 at 2:00 pm.
