Women's Volleyball Captures Region 19 Championship In Dominant Fashion

Scranton, PA – The 3-seeded Monroe University women's volleyball hoisted the Region 19 Championship on Saturday afternoon, defeating 2-seeded Delaware Tech Community College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-11), before upsetting top-seeded Lackawanna College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-14).

It was smooth sailing toward a Region 19 Championship for the Mustangs, winning their 19th and 20th straight-set victory of the season. Freshman Flavia Pecora earned MVP of the tournament, while fellow freshman Jelena Peric was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Pecora was phenomenal, contributing 28 kills across the semi-final and final round. Peric followed suit, tallying 14 kills to go along with a team-high 29 digs.

In the semi-finals against Delaware Tech, the Mustangs were decisive on the offensive end, outpacing the 2-seed 37-15 in the kill category despite trailing in the total attempt department.

Freshman Elin De Boer tallied 31 assists in the victory, earning Monroe a spot in the title game.

Against the Falcons in the championship, a first set rout segued into a tight second set. But a narrow 25-22 victory put the Mustangs on the verge of a championship.

A 13-6 advantage in the kill department in set three helped the Mustangs to a 25-14 win. Pecora finished with an impressive 17 kills in the contest. De Boer one upped her assist tally from the semi-final to give her 64 on the tournament. Three Mustangs put up double-digit digs in the win.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
