New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's volleyball team fell to No. 21 Harford Community College, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 17-25), in the Mid-Atlantic District Championship Match on Saturday afternoon.
Four Mustangs recorded double-digit kills in the match, but couldn't come up with the victory despite winning the first set. Defense defined the first set victory for Monroe as Harford converted on just 10.8% of their kill attempts in the set.
The second set was much more competitive, with Harford putting together a massive comeback. After trailing 10-5 in the set, the Fighting Owls took a 16-10 lead in stunning fashion. Even with Monroe mounting a comeback late, Harford controlled the rest of the set after its mid-set turnaround.
In set three, freshman
Flavia Pecora dominated. The Italian native started the set on the bench, but once she came in, with Monroe trailing, a switch had been flipped. A kill and a block put the Mustangs right back into the contest.
The crucial third set was suddenly tied at 18, until two straight kills from Pecora put the Mustangs in front, 20-18. Harford came back, however, tying the set at 21 and eventually jumping in front 23-22. A fourth touch by Monroe gave Harford its 24th point, signaling the end for the upset-minded Mustangs.
The fourth set was all Harford as they cruised to a district championship.
Pecora paced the Mustangs with 14 kills, chipping in ten digs and two blocks as well.
