New Rochelle, NY – Fueled by a three-goal, second half comeback, the Monroe University women's soccer team emerged from Skidelsky Field with a 3-3 draw against Harcum College on Friday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening 45 minutes, and 3-0 by the 64th minute, the Mustangs rattled off three scores in the final 16 minutes of regulation to stun the visiting Bears.
The comeback started in the 74th minute when sophomore Katherine Neves cashed in on a penalty kick. It marked Neves's ninth goal of the season, a team-high.
Just two minutes later, freshman Carmen Santamaria scored off a straight-away free kick, hitting the crossbar and ricocheting in for the goal to make it 3-2.
Sophomore Roxie Fowler then delivered the electrifying equalizer in the 84th minute, lofting it over the Harcum keeper from outside the box to level the match at three. Freshman Leni Fohrer assisted on the goal.
It was a gutsy result for the Mustangs after falling behind early. Harcum set the tone and was rewarded with a 9th minute goal. Nine minutes later, the Bears were back on the attack, making it a 2-0 game.
A third goal put the match in doubt until the Mustangs rallied for the shocking result.
Santamaria and Neves paced the Mustangs with four shots apiece.
Monroe sits at 5-3-1 with Friday's result. There is one home game remaining on the schedule, which will be played on Wednesday, October 16 against Felician JV at 1:00 pm.
