Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Splits Saturday Slate

Lake Worth, FL & Ft. Pierce, FL – The Monroe University women's volleyball team split its Saturday doubleheader, dropping its first match since September 24 to Palm Beach State College, 3-2 (25-11, 25-27, 25-23, 21-25, 17-19), but rebounding to defeat Indian River State College, 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 19-25, 15-13).

In match one against Palm Beach State, the Mustangs took set one in decisive fashion. Converting on 27.6% of its kill attempts, Monroe committed just three errors and contributed 11 kills to easily dismantle the Panthers.

Set two was tight, with the Panthers emerging with 27 points despite being outscored in the kill department, 12-9. Despite the disparity in kills, the teams were separated by 0.1 percentage points in total attacks, leading to Palm Beach State tying the match.

Another close bout in set three set up a 2-1 advantage for the Mustangs, but back-to-back close losses in set four and five led to Monroe's first loss in October.

Freshman Jelena Peric led the way with 14 kills, while freshmen Madison Smith and Natalia Rodriguez contributed 13 and 12 kills, respectively.

Freshman Mileyshka Melendez topped 40 assists for the fifth time this season as she tallied 43.

The second match against Indian River State College was all Monroe early, with the Mustangs taking a 2-0 lead on two convincing sets. But the Pioneers battled back, evening the match up.

However, Monroe fended off defeat and avoided a sweep with a 15-13 victory in set three.

Peric put together a season-high 24 kills to help lead the Mustangs to victory.

The Mustangs will conclude their regular season slate on Tuesday, October 22, at 6:00 pm when they take on Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY.
