Mount Vernon, NY – The Monroe University football team put on a clinic on Saturday afternoon, defeating Community Christian College (MI), 68-14, at the Stadium at Memorial Field. Freshman Jayden Young was spectacular against the Lions, throwing for 336 yards and connecting on six touchdown passes.
Five different receivers caught touchdown passes from Young, with freshman Donovan Brown leading the way with two scores. Brown also paced the Mustangs with 129 receiving yards.
The first score of the day was on the second play from scrimmage, with Brown rattling off a catch and run for 55 yards. Another catch and run set up by a lead pass from Young occurred on Monroe's second possession of the day. Freshman Jarelle Taylor cashed in on the 38-yard score.
The ground game got going for Monroe's next score, with redshirt sophomore Sean Robinson pushing the envelope with a 61-yard run. He ran for a total of 133 yards in the dominant all-around showing by the Mustang offense.
Two more touchdown passes in the second quarter to freshmen Jashaun Amin and Kamari Hughes put the Mustangs up 33-0. A blocked punt returned for a touchdown put an exclamation point on a dominant first half, with sophomore Na'il Johnson delivering the blow to the Lions.
Freshman Khameen Powell started the second half with a 62-yard touchdown, marking Young's fifth of the day. Brown then added to the scoring with a game-high 74-yard reception to put the Mustangs ahead, 54-0.
The Lions put some points on the board late in the third quarter, but Monroe earned back those points thanks to a 12-yard run from Robinson, his second of the day.
Freshman Rodreckus Johnson then put the finishing touches on the outing with a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Monroe outgained Community Christian College 579 to 275, with the Mustangs averaging 15.24 yards per play.
As dominant as the offense performed, the defense was equally impressive, limiting the Lions to 4.82 yards per play. Freshmen Jordan Byron and Jacob Brown each recorded a sack, while freshmen Michael Henderson and Matthew Courtney led the way with four total tackles each.
The win marked the largest margin of victory for the Mustangs on the season and moved the team's record to 3-3 on the year. They will travel to Garden City, NY for their next matchup against Nassau Community College on Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 pm.
