Garden City, NY – The Monroe University football team used a strong second half to increase its win streak to two games in a 40-16 victory at Nassau Community College on Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Field.
The Mustangs scored 33 consecutive points to finish the game, with 19 of those points being scored across the final 15 minutes of competition. Monroe outgained the Lions 164-53 from the 1:53 mark of the second quarter, which was when the visitors cut their deficit to two points.
Prior to that, Nassau responded well to an early 7-0 hole, scoring 16 straight to take a 16-7 lead.
Freshman
Jashaun Amin put the Mustangs on the board with a 15-yard touchdown pass from freshman
Raeden Oliver. But a safety converted by the Lions began a dominant second quarter run that flipped the script of the contest.
However, the run game began to pick up for the Mustangs, leading to the big turnaround. Freshman
Rodreckus Johnson capped off a six play, 80-yard possession to end the half on a high note and the ground game didn't let up after that.
Monroe shutout Nassau 26-0 over the second half as Johnson added a touchdown on the ground following a 12-yard scoring run from redshirt sophomore
Sean Robinson. Oliver too joined the scoring barrage via the run with the final score of the game. Prior to that, sophomore
Theodore McDuffie contributed a scoop-and-score on the defensive side to further increase the lead.
All in all, the Mustangs outgained the Lions by 115 yards, including 103 on the ground. Johnson led the way with 85 yards, while Robinson followed up his solid performance against Community Christian College last week with 56 yards and a touchdown on Saturday.
On defense, McDuffie paced Monroe with six total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss for -20 yards. Five different players forced six fumbles on the day, constantly disrupting Nassau's momentum. McDuffie and freshman
Dylan Davis recovered a fumble each.
Monroe will return home for its final home game of the year against No. 10 Lackawanna College on Saturday, November 2, at 4:00 pm in Mount Vernon, NY.
