Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 12 Monroe Mustangs Women’s Soccer Explodes in Second Half for 8-0 Victory over USC Lancaster in Season Opener

LANCASTER, S.C., August 27, 2023 – After a quiet first half, the No. 12-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team did a ton of damage in the final 45 minutes on Sunday to defeat USC Lancaster, 8-0. The Mustangs start their season 1-0 with the dominant win, while the Lancers fall to 0-2.

Despite 10 shot attempts, four of which went on goal, in the first half, the Mustangs were unable to get on the board in the opening 45 minutes. Everything changed just moments into the second half when Samara Dullabh scored off an assist from Anna Pires in the 48th minute to break the scoreless tie.

Just over two minutes later, Dullabh set up Louise Featherstone for another goal, doubling the lead at 2-0. Featherstone potted another in the 57th minute with an assist coming from Roxie Fowler to push the lead to three. Dullabh then picked up her second of the day off a feed from Chrissie Burke in the 66th minute to five Monroe a 4-0 advantage.

After nearly 10 minutes of silence, the Mustangs scored a barrage of goals to put the game completely out of reach. Burke found Dormeyer for her first goal of the season in the 76th minute, and then Dormeyer scored once again just 32 seconds later off a cross from Katherine Neves for a 6-0 lead. Neves then scored one herself in the 77th minute to put Monroe up, 7-0. Neves then set up one more goal with just 20 seconds left in the game, finding Paula Campos for the score to reach an 8-0 final.

Three Mustang goalies got into Sunday's game, but none of them were challenged in the game, as the Monroe backs allowed just one shot attempt by the Lancers in the full 90 minutes. Natalie Dobler picked up the win for the Mustangs by being in net when Monroe took the lead early in the second half. Madeline Adams took the loss in net for the Lancers after yielding five goals in 60 minutes.

Dullabh finished with five points on the afternoon with her two goals and an assist. Featherstone and Dormeyer each scored twice, while Neves had a four-point afternoon with a goal and two assists.

The Mustangs absolutely dominated time of possession in the game and outshot USC Lancaster, 24-1, including a 14-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs also had three of the game's four corner kicks.

The Mustangs will now return home for a few days before taking a trip down to Maryland for another pair of matches next weekend. The trip begins on Friday, Sept. 1, when they visit Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. Kickoff on Friday is set for 4:30 p.m.
