Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road at Div. II No. 2 CCBC Essex

BALTIMORE, Md., February 3, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team dropped an 84-62 score at NJCAA Div. II No. 2 CCBC Essex Friday evening. The Mustangs fall to 13-12 overall with the loss, while the Knights improve to 22-1.
 
Later in the first quarter of Friday's contest, Olivia Medford and Amiyah Edney-Holmes produced eight points on a 9-1 run for the Mustangs to put them up, 14-8. The home team then turned things around with a big run of its own, scoring the final 14 points of the period to take a 22-14 lead into the second.
 
The Knights hit a pair of threes to open the scoring in the second quarter to go up, 28-14. The momentum kept up for CCBC Essex, which took a 38-23 advantage into the halftime break.
 
The Mustangs came out of the locker room with some fire, scoring the first seven points of the third to get back within eight. The Knights then halted the run and got to the free-throw line a bunch, resulting in 10 straight points. CCBC Essex's Tiffany Hammond hit a pair of threes later in the frame to make it a 59-42 game, before the Knights later scored seven straight to go up, 66-44. Naomi Barnwell hit 1-of-2 from the foul line in the final minute to send the game to the fourth with CCBC Essex up, 66-45.
 
The Knights opened the fourth with six straight points to go up, 72-45. Medford then hit back-to-back threes, followed by a jumper, for an 8-0 run for Monroe. Unfortunately, it was not enough to push the Mustangs back into the game, as they fell, 84-62, at the final buzzer.
 
Medford finished with 16 points to lead the team on Friday. Edney-Holmes and Emma Wilson-Saltos matched with 13 points apiece, while Wilson-Saltos registered a double-double with 16 rebounds. She also produced three blocks and two assists. Barnwell tallied 11 points with nine boards in the game.
 
The Mustangs will go back on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 7, when they visit Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
