GALVESTON, Texas, February 17, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs softball team capped off its season-opening trip to Texas with one final matchup at Galveston College. The home team picked up the win in Friday's single game, 12-1.
Â
The Mustangs scored their only run of the game right away in the top of the first.
Mya Jack led off with a walk, and then moved to second on a ground out by
Genesis Duarte-Suarez. With two outs,
Marissa Thalassinos smacked a double to center to bring Jack home and give Monroe a quick 1-0 lead.
Â
Unfortunately, the lead did not last for long. The Whitecaps scored six runs in the home half of the first to take a big lead. They added another four in the third, followed by a two-run fourth frame to reach the eventual final score of 12-1.
Â
Karlie Barba went all five innings for the Whitecaps to earn the win and improve to 3-0.
Varela Cappas made the start for Monroe, taking the loss despite allowing only unearned runs in the game.
Â
Thalassinos hit 1-for-2 with an RBI double in the game.
Angie Ordonez hit 1-for-2 with a double as well.
Â
The Mustangs will return home for a few days before heading back out on the road for a weekend in the Carolinas. The trip begins at USC Union in Union, S.C. on Friday, Feb. 24, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
