NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 15, 2023 – On a night when he was honored during pregame, sophomore
Prince-Malachi Reid went off for 29 points to help the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team defeat SUNY Sullivan JV, 80-69, at the Monroe Athletic Complex Wednesday evening. The Mustangs improve to 17-7 with the win, while the Generals fall to 11-6.
Reid produced his highest scoring output of the season in Wednesday's victory with his 29 points. He shot 11-of-21 from the field, adding seven rebounds as well.
Jaheim Gregory was next for the Mustangs with 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Davion Bonar added 16 points and eight boards.
The Generals jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first half, but the Mustangs responded with the next six to take the lead right back. The Generals went back up, 13-10, but
Davion Bonar and
Ebrihima Dibasey scored the next four points to put the Mustangs back in the lead.
Oswaldo Rook then hit a three for Sullivan, but a jumper by Reid tied the game up at 16-16. The Generals managed to hang onto the lead with a 26-22 advantage before the Mustangs scored four straight to tie it up. Over the final four minutes, the Generals outscored the Mustangs, 8-4, to take a 34-30 lead into the half.
Reid led the Mustangs with 12 points at the break, adding four rebounds. Gregory scored eight with a team-best five boards.
The Mustangs took a 40-38 lead on the Generals early in the second half, later pushing the lead to 50-42 with 12:52 on the clock. After the Generals cut the deficit back down to four, Reid hit a three, and then Bonar hit a pair of layups, pushing Monroe's advantage to 61-50. Uriah Ladson hit 1-of-2 free throws for Sullivan, but
Jaheim Gregory sank a three, followed by two points for Reid, making it a 66-51 game.
The Generals then began to chip away, scoring six straight to get within nine. They later scored another six in a row to make it a 68-63 game with 4:03 to play. With the lead at six,
Daniel McCollum hit a big three for the Mustangs with just 56 seconds left to put the game out of reach. The Mustangs made their free throws down the stretch to win the game by 11.
The Mustangs head upstate on Friday, Feb. 17, to visit Herkimer College JV in Herkimer, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
