ALVIN, Texas, February 14, 2023 –
Samuel Herrera made his first-ever start for the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team, and it could not have gone better for the freshman from Panama, as he led the Mustangs to a 1-0 shutout victory at No. 15 Alvin Community College on Tuesday. The Mustangs improve to 1-4 on the season with the win, while the Dolphins drop to 3-7.
Â
Herrera was brilliant in Tuesday's start. He went seven innings without allowing a run. He struck out 10 batters while allowing just two hits and two walks to earn his first victory as a Mustang.
Brailin Duran held the Dolphins off the board with a perfect eighth frame, including two strikeouts.
Carlos Peguero earned his first save of the season for Monroe by escaping trouble without any damage in the ninth.
Â
The Mustangs got on the board in the top of the second in Tuesday's contest for the only offensive production of the game for either team. With one out,
Jeremy De La Mota singled into left field to get a rally going. He then stole second, and a ground out by
Diego Urreta moved him to third.
Yeremay Moreno then brought him home with an RBI single to short, giving the Mustangs the early 1-0 advantage.
Â
Herrera's performance included getting the Dolphins to hit into double plays in each of the first two innings of the game. His last inning may have been his strongest, as he struck out all three batters in the seventh. Herrera shut the Dolphins down in order four different times in his first start.
Â
The Mustangs were in trouble in the ninth after two walks and an infield single loaded the bases with one out. Peguero then got Carter Allen to pop up to first for the second out. Daniel Burroway then hit a slow chopper to short that
Gilbert Gomez fielded cleanly and flipped to
Pedro Crespo at second to end the game.
Â
The Mustangs needed just four hits to pick up the win on Tuesday. Moreno hit 1-for-3 with what proved to be the game-winning RBI, while De La Mota scored the game's only run after a 1-for-3 effort of his own. Urreta also batted 1-for-3, while
Ronald Almanzar went 1-for-4.
Â
Alvin starter Sebastian Soliz took his first loss of the season despite allowing just one run on two hits across four innings. Bryce Bergeron did a lot of the work for Alvin in relief, going three innings without yielding a run.
Â
The Mustangs take the next two days off before reaching their final destination on their trip down south. They will open up a four-game series with No. 6 San Jacinto College on Thursday, Feb. 16. Thursday's matchup is set for a 4 p.m. EST first pitch.
