NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 1, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team took care of business at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Wednesday, defeating Touro College, 88-67. The Mustangs improve to 14-6 overall with the win.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start in Wednesday's contest, jumping out to a 10-2 lead on the Tornadoes. Touro fought back with six straight points, but the Mustangs turned things right back around with the next seven, five of which came from
Ebrihima Dibasey. The Mustangs steadily built upon their lead, going up by 13 points after a
Daniel McCollum three with 5:19 left in the half. After Touro got back within nine, the Mustangs went on a 13-4 run to close out the half, taking a 44-26 advantage into the break.
Davion Bonar led the Mustangs with 10 points at the break, as well as three assists.
Prince-Malachi Reid contributed eight points and a team-high five rebounds. Dibasey,
Jaheim Gregory and McCollum each had seven points in the half.
Early in the second half, the Mustangs rattled off 12 straight points, taking a commanding 59-29 lead. The Tornadoes fought back over the next 10 minutes, cutting the deficit to 19 points with 5:17 to play. The Mustangs held off the Tornadoes down the stretch, hanging on to win the game by 21.
Five Mustangs reached double figures on Wednesday. Reid registered a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, adding three steals, three assists and a block in a stellar performance. Bonar and Gregory each had 16 points in the win. Bonar led the team with six assists, while Gregory had six boards and two blocks. Dibasey tallied 12 points with seven rebounds and four assists, while
Kofi Mends picked up 11 points and six boards. McCollum just missed double-digits, finishing with nine points and six rebounds.
The Mustangs take a trip to New England this Saturday, Feb. 4, to take on Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
