NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 11, 2023 – A jam-packed crowd at the Monroe Athletic Complex helped the Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team honor its eight sophomore ahead of a three-set victory over Harford Community College Wednesday evening. The Mustangs improve to 14-8 overall with their seventh straight win, while Harford drops to 20-4.
After celebrating Monroe's sophomore, Wednesday's match got off to a bit of a slow start for the Mustangs, seeing the Fighting Owls take an early 5-3 lead. With the game later knotted up at 8-8, the Mustangs found their groove and scored the next six points to take a comfortable lead. The lead reached eight points at 18-10, with Harford only getting as close as six points at 20-14. The Mustangs then scored the next four to reach set point, eventually closing out the opening set with a 25-17 win.
The Mustangs rode the momentum from the opening set into the next one, sprinting out to a commanding 14-2 advantage on the Fighting Owls. They kept their foot on the gas, eventually turning a 19-6 edge into a 25-6 final to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Monroe got off to a huge start in the third frame of Wednesday's match, scoring 14 straight points before the Fighting Owls got on the board for the first time. They rattled off another four in a row to go up, 18-1, before Harford scored 3-of-4 to make it a 19-4 score. Harford kept fighting to keep the match going, but it was never in doubt for the Mustangs, as they picked up a 25-9 win to close out the night.
The Mustangs hit a stellar .412 in the match while holding the Fighting Owls to a .000 clip.
Gabriela Aimi Zuquelo took the lead Wednesday evening with 10 kills and 11 digs for a double-double.
Darlenys Olivo was next with six kills, adding three aces and three digs.
Doriangelis Serrano Reynoso,
Kiara Figueroa and
Rebecca Rosculet each totaled five kills in the win.
Martina Villani passed out a team-high 20 assists to go with two aces and four digs, while
Francesca Andreon handed out 13 assists and picked up three digs.
Alessia Gallo served up a team-high six aces and scooped up seven digs.
Manon Braunsteffer led the team with a pair of blocks to go with her four kills.
The Mustangs are back on the road this Saturday, Oct. 14, to take on Richard Bland College in a rare doubleheader in Petersburg, Va. The first of two matches with the Statesmen will begin at 10 a.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
