NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 16, 2023 – Five Mustangs scored in double figures on Monday as the Monroe College JV men's basketball team defeated Manhattanville College JV, 90-72, Monday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 10-4 overall on the season with the win.
Ebrihima Dibasey led the way when all was said and done with 14 points, adding four steals and four rebounds in the win.
Richie Guillaume registered a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, adding four assists as well.
Prince-Malachi Reid matched Guillaume with 13 points.
Kofi Mends tallied 12 points with five boards, while
Davion Bonar picked up 10 points to go with four rebounds and four assists.
Jaheim Gregory was all over the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.
After a tight start that saw the Mustangs grab a 6-5 lead, Monroe turned up the heat with 12 straight points for an 18-5 advantage just over six minutes into Monday's contest. The Mustangs had a hard time missing, pushing the lead to 28-10 just past the midway point of the first half. Later in the frame, a 9-1 run for the Mustangs saw the lead peak at 24 points. Manhattanville responded with the next eight points, but a
Daniel McCollum free throw closed out half with Monroe on top, 43-26.
An eight-point run for the Mustangs early in the second half had them on top, 55-29. Manhattanville's Gustavo Cometti-Lacerda caught fire, scoring 11 points on a Manhattanville 13-5 stretch to cut the deficit back down to 17 for the visitors.
Jefferson Liranzo and
Kofi Mends hit back-to-back threes to turn the momentum back toward Monroe, putting the Mustangs back up by 22 with 7:00 on the clock. The teams continued to trade baskets back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, seeing the Mustangs hang on by 18 through the final buzzer.
The Mustangs shot 52.1 percent (38-of-73) from the field in the win. Depth played a big role, as Monroe's bench outscored Manhattanville's reserves, 36-8. Monroe also dominated from in close, holding a 58-18 advantage in points in the paint.
The Mustangs are back on the road on Thursday, Jan. 19, to take on Harcum College JV in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
