BEL AIR, Md., January 12, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team took the lead six minutes into Thursday's contest and never looked back, defeating Harford Community College, 69-21, at APG Federal Credit Union Arena. The Mustangs improve to 9-8 with the win, while the Fighting Owls drop to 2-12.
The Mustangs fell behind, 5-2, over the first four minutes of the game on Thursday. They responded by scoring the next eight points to take a 10-5 lead. Harford's Molly Mullaney made a layup just before the buzzer to leave Monroe up by three heading to the second.
Monroe's lead reached five again before Harford scored four straight to make it a one-point game. The Mustangs then dominated the rest of the second quarter, scoring 15 straight points before the Fighting Owls could halt the run with a free throw with just 43 seconds left before the break, sending the game to the half with the Mustangs up, 27-12.
Sara Carvajal-Caro was off to a great start in the first half, scoring eight points with four rebounds.
Khalia Bryant provided four points and matched
Aysia Pink with a team-high five boards.
Olivia Medford tallied six points in the half.
Amiyah Edney-Holmes had four points with four steals and three rebounds.
The Mustangs stayed hot to start the second half, scoring the first nine points of the third quarter to go up, 36-12. Holding onto a 21-point lead, the Mustangs went on another 8-0 run later in the third to take a commanding 47-18 advantage. Harford's Julia Skinner made a three before the end of the period to go to the fourth with the Mustangs ahead, 47-21. The Mustangs continued their dominance in the fourth quarter, shutting out the Fighting Owls while scoring 22 points of their own to close out the 69-21 victory.
Bryant finished with team highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds in the win for a double-double. Edney-Holmes was next with 14 points, adding five boards and four steals. Carvajal-Caro toatled 10 points with four rebounds. Medford contributed nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Emma Wilson-Saltos scored nine points and pulled down seven boards.
Monroe is back home at the Monroe Athletic Complex this weekend to host the Monroe College MLK Classic. The Mustangs open the weekend on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they take on Essex County College at 2 p.m.
